Democracy is often reduced to an exercise of majoritarianism. But in ethnically and culturally diverse Southeast Asia, how should democracy be exercised? Is it truly always a simple principle of “majority rules”?

Here at New Naratif, we believe that a democracy must work for all peoples, whether majority or minority, in line with what we believe Southeast Asian democracy should aspire to be. So come join the second event of our Principles of Democracy series, based off the similarly-titled explainer series, where we’ll outline the key fundamentals for Southeast Asian democracy.

Our second event of the series will touch upon a key aspect of Southeast Asian democracy —majority rule and minority rights. Together with our guest Robert Hii, we’ll hear about how democracy should work for all, and not just the majority by discussing the concept of majority rule and minority rights through the lens of a Malaysian Sabahan.

Join us on Friday, 13 October , from 8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. for Principles of Democracy: Majority Rule and Minority Rights! This event is free for New Naratif members and USD1 for non-members. Don’t forget to get your tickets below!
