We Deserve It, Don’t We? The Case for Never Giving up on Our Feminist Struggles

Confronted with a myriad of structural and systemic challenges deeply ingrained in our daily lives, the pursuit of gender justice is an arduous journey–but an indispensable one if we are to create a brighter future.

Writer’s Note

This comic is adapted from the first and second explainers of the SOGIESC-informed Democratic Participation research. The research aims to explore Southeast Asian democracy from the perspective of feminist and gender justice activists in the region. Through this research, from September 2022 to October 2023, we conversed with fourteen feminist and gender justice activists in seven Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines. We also held one focus group discussion with four activists (FGD1), and one community peer review with five participants (CPR1).

This research employed a small-N study design, focusing on a limited number of cases for in-depth insights rather than statistical representativeness. To ensure the anonymity of research participants, we identified each of them by labels (N1, N2, N3…) chronologically from the oldest to the latest conversation.
